Africa's Most Famous Soccer Teams

The Premier Soccer League, or PSL, is home to some of Africa's most famous soccer players. It is comprised of sixteen national clubs, each based in a different area. Recent champions are the Orlando Pirates, the Kaizer Chiefs, and Supersport United. The top league there is the ABSA Premiership, and the next league is the National First Division. Here, you will learn more about the leagues and their players.

The Kaizer Chiefs

This football club is based in Johannesburg's Naturena region, and it was established in January 1970. This club is named after an old team from America, the Atlanta Chiefs, that team founder Kaizer Motaung played for. The team's colors are black and gold, and they have the nickname Amakhosi, or "Chief". Their logo has the profile of a chief wearing a native headdress. The Chiefs were the champions of the PSL for 2003 and 2004.

The Orlando Pirates

This club is also based in the Johannesburg area, and it was established in 1937. The Pirates are the oldest soccer club in South Africa, and they were founded by a group that left the Orlando Boys Club. They are also called the Buccaneers, and their club's colors are white and black. The club's logo is a skull and crossbones with a star on top. The Pirates were PSL champions for 2000 and 2002, and they play their home games at Johannesburg's Ellis Stadium.

Supersport United

This club was founded in 1995, when the South African TV company MNet bought the floundering Pretoria City club bringing soccer on your home theater. The network changed the club's name in order to make it more recognizable, and its crest has the shape of bull horns with four stars at the top and a soccer ball at the bottom. Supersport United is headquartered in Pretoria and plays its home games in Atteridgeville's Super Stadium in Gauteng province. The club's colors are white and blue, and they've earned the nickname "The Swanky Boys". The team won the PSL championship in 2007 and 2008.
